Home in Hlabisa

To find Angeline’s rural home, which is also her place of work, you head north from Durban along the coastal N2 highway for about 200 km, then turn inland into rolling hills, along a road that is best driven slowly and with care. It first cuts through the heart of the iMfolozi-Hluhluwe Game Reserve, where you could easily encounter elephants on or next to the road, and then through a rural landscape where speed bumps mark the many villages and where cattle, goats, dogs and other domestic animals have right of way.

On your first visit, Angeline will meet you outside the Hlabisa post office and then guide you further up into the hills along unmarked dirt roads, to the home that she built for herself and her children – a collection of four rondavels and rectangular structures, edged by mealie fields, an outdoor cooking area and water storage tanks.
